Play old videogames

image

Don’t get me wrong I want to play every single new game that comes out the instant it’s released but waiting a couple years allows me to save:

  • Money: older games are usually cheaper and include DLC.
  • Time: time is a great filter that has allowed me to avoid overhyped “Fortnite Killer” type bullshit.
  • Effort: older games are more likely to be patched up and play smoother.

The biggest problem with an older game is trying to play online and getting destroyed by people who have been playing the game for a few years but I play for fun and probably wouldn’t put the time in required to be competitive anyway.

Just to be clear I think Dr. Mario is a shit game and I’m sad that Puyo Puyo & Panel De Pon haven’t become mainstream.

How I try to play a videogame series now

image

If I “fall behind” in a videogame series I used to try and start with playing the first one and think I would make my way sequentially until I played the latest installment. This rarely happened because it makes a fun activity like playing videogames feel like a gargantuan task or almost like work.

Now, unless the story requires it, I’ll just start with the latest installment. The latest installment of a game series likely has the best graphics, gameplay fixes and numerous quality of life updates that will make the best impression to me. If I like the game a lot or wanted more of the lore then I’ll go back and play the previous ones and will likely be more forgiving to derpy parts.

Or if I’m lucky they’ll remake the previous installments in HD or whatever.

Things I’ve completed recently

I’m trying to not “broadcast" plans because it makes it harder to follow through and finish them so instead here is stuff I’ve done:

  • Zelda: Links Awakening (Switch) - I still remembered a bunch of it from playing it on GameBoy 25 years ago but it was still lots of fun. Hope they do a Link to the Past remake in the same style and fix the weird frame rate issues.
  • New. Super Mario U Deluxe (Switch) - I skipped the Wii U so it was nice to get to play this one. Tons of fun level designs and boss fights. The ending was pretty anti-climatic compared to Mario Oddessey. My only gripe on the 2D plane 3D Mario games is the controls don’t feel as tight as the traditional 2D Mario games - but it might also just be a feeling.
  • Redesigned the TrueNuff homepage - Website carousels are usually pointless so I tried to have fun with Bitch Bear telling recent news and he’ll also do special holiday themed ones (read more).
  • Fixed & Relaunched TrueNuff Comic website - I blogged about trying to do this in 2017 and lost momentum so yeah lesson to self: don’t say what you’re gonna do and just do it (read more).
  • Updated my blog - the one you are reading right now.

I also read this blog post and took the training wheels off my son’s bike.

Picture is capsule toys got from AliExpress and yes they took forever to get here.

Three bullet Thursday: stuff I’ve done recently

image
  • Finished Super Mario Odyssey: Awesome game that felt more like Mario 64 which is great because I couldn’t get into Sunshine or Galaxy. Best ending of a Mario game probably ever. Surprised at the amount of post-Bowser content but I will probably quit around ~500 power moons.
  • Side Projects: Moved TrueNuff Blog to Tumblr & Added old work to my portfolio.
  • Spending time with my kids: The pandemic is a bummer but on the plus side I’m seeing my kids more than I did when I worked at the office. Seeing them make stuff with Lego is fuckin’ wild and gives me a great excuse to play with Lego again.
